How to Beat Sugar Cravings on the HCG Program
Sugar cravings on the HCG program are one of the most common struggles I hear about from clients — and the good news is that with the right approach, they’re entirely manageable. The key is starting before you begin the protocol and continuing the same habits well into maintenance.
Start by Removing Refined Sugar
If you want to avoid cravings on the HCG program, the first step is reducing your sugar intake and building up good healthy fats. It sounds simple in theory — the challenge is in the execution. Start by switching to natural sweeteners only and removing all foods containing refined sugar. Refined sugar is hidden in processed foods far more often than most people realise, so you’ll need to read labels carefully and do a little research to understand exactly what counts as refined sugar.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) deserves particular attention. It’s derived from corn and found in an enormous range of processed foods. HFCS is notoriously difficult to limit because of the effect it has on your organs and brain — it actively triggers your body to crave more of it. Even a small amount can set off a cycle of wanting more, which makes keeping sugar cravings on the HCG program under control much harder.
It’s also worth considering how much HFCS you might be consuming without realising it. It’s not just in sweet items — you’re likely consuming it every time you eat something out of a box, wrapper or packet. Bread, crackers and pizza are common culprits. If you’re eating a lot of processed food right up until you begin the program, you’re setting yourself up for more intense cravings once you start.
Replace refined sugar with more nutritious, unprocessed, whole forms instead — honey, coconut sugar, sucanat, rapadura and muscovado are all good options. This does mean stepping away from convenience foods like a quick cake or store-bought dip on your way to a party, unless you have access to a good health food store or a local café making genuinely paleo or homemade options.
Increase Your Healthy Fat Intake
One of the biggest contributors to sugar cravings on the HCG program is simply not getting enough healthy whole fats in your diet. Healthy dietary fats help stabilise blood sugar — sweet cravings often happen because of a dip in blood sugar, and fats are what bring stability and even out those dips. Interestingly, poor blood sugar regulation can also affect your hormones, which is another reason this matters more than people realise.
If you’re experiencing sugar cravings, make sure you’re including full fat dairy, butter, and grass-fed or organic meat fats in your diet (outside the HCG protocol itself, during your loading and maintenance phases). Contrary to what’s often popularised in mainstream media, you won’t increase your risk of heart attack from eating good quality fats. The fats genuinely worth avoiding are trans fats, partially hydrogenated fats, interesterified fats and the cheap, rancid vegetable oils commonly used in processed food. If a doctor or nutritionist tells you otherwise, they may simply not be up to date with current research.
You Can Absolutely Do This
Managing sugar cravings on the HCG program is entirely achievable when you’re eating plenty of whole fats and only consuming sugar in its whole, natural form occasionally. Cravings should never feel so overwhelming that they take over your day. Make small changes, become aware of new foods and new habits, and you’ll find yourself feeling lighter, healthier and more in control.
If you’ve successfully reduced refined sugar at home, increased your intake of whole fats, removed processed snacks from your pantry, and reserved homemade treats for occasional enjoyment only — you’ve achieved exactly what you set out to do. You’re now eating naturally, in moderation, in a way that genuinely supports your long-term health.
Well done!
